There is a lot of hype out there about phytoestrogens, plant estrogens that are claimed to mimic estrogenic activity in the body. What I have come to conclude is that phytoestrogens are NOT the issue XENOestrogens are. "Xenoestrogens include synthetic industrial chemicals used as solvents/lubricants and their byproducts such as plastics (bisphenol A, BPA), plasticizers (phthalates), flame retardants (polybrominated diphenyl ethers, PBDEs), pesticides (dichlorodiphenyItrichloroethane, DDT), and various pharmaceutical agents (diethylstilbestrol, DES)." Xenoestrogens are everywhere and on everything! Consider - It's near impossible to avoid plastics today.
Phthalates are common in fragrances including scented body care products (think lotions, perfumes, shower gel, shaving gel, hair products etc...) and scented home use products (think cleaners, candles, wall plugs, laundry products etc...) Even ordinary paper towel and toilet paper often contain xenoestrogens! Then add on chemical and pharmaceutical byproduct wastes in our water systems. Seriously, they're everywhere!
Take heart! That's where phytoestrogens shine! It has been shown through various studies that phytoestrogens actually protect cell receptor sites from xenoestrogens!
Plants protect us from environmental toxins! Of course the quality of the plant matters!
